AHL Connecticut Whale debacle

Not sure who here has followed this or who even cares, but I thought this whole story has been a clusterfuck since day one and this story is just the icing on the cake. As a fan of the Hartford Whalers and their history, this is just a piss poor way of trying to "honor" the heritage.

I think its great. Why shouldn't they change to something honoring the Whalers? Its just as Cleveland once did with the Barons in the AHL a few years back. I love the Hartford Whalers, I have a Whalers T-shirt and Jersey...and have Brass Bonanza. If this connects better with the old Whalers faithful then why the hell not. Why should they be stuck with the Wolfpack if they don't care about it?

Its just as this year when the Lowell Lock Monsters relocated to Charlotte and instead of sticking with the Charlotte Lock Monsters they called themselves the Charlotte Checkers instead; which had been there for years.

I am all for them honoring the Whale and I too have Whaler merch, but to pretty much steal the design from the guy and not give him credit is where it is shitty. "hey Hartford check it out, we got the Whale back....kinda....and we're not going to give the artist credit for it." so there still remains a bit of controversy around it

Yeah, it's the stealing controversy that irks me. Not the renaming of the team. They should've never gotten rid of the Whalers in the first place.

Meh, the only reason they waited this long to re-name a team the Whalers is because the city finally let the patent expire. As soon as the logo became public domain the NHL started to re-make the jerseys and produce more Whalers stuff. Give the guy a shoutout, but seriously...what else is needed?

Who cares? Is it the original Whale Logo? No. Did he sell the rights to it? If he did then what's the problem?

I'm not even complaining about the Whalers history and now this chapter. I'm sorry if I was leading to believe that was the issue.

My biggest complaint is about Hartford stealing the guy's work and not even giving him an acknowledgement, let alone a paycheck. As far as the article shows, he didn't "sell the rights". He was asked to do some work for the team, which they apparently liked. Then they allowed another person/group to take credit for the drawings along with the mighty "blessing of the Whalers".

My underlying, petty complaint is that yeah, the AHL franchise is "honoring" the Whalers by using a shitty cartoony drawing as to be "fan/kid friendly" because that's what sells merch.

from reading the article the artist is pissed because he wasn't given credit rather another dude got credit for his work, if they just give the guy his due like say this dude drawned this stuff it be all cool.
