PostSubject: Minnesota players in the draft   Tue Jun 21, 2011 3:28 am

TaLoN and I usually go back and forth on some of the players coming out of high school and how good they are (or if they are overrated.) Last year it was mostly debate on Bjugstad (I took the view that I thought he was a bit overrated based on the few games I saw him) while I think we agreed on Brock Nelson. In '09 we debated the Wild passing on Jordan Schroeder while taking Nick Leddy (but I think we both agreed that both players should be fairly decent in the NHL.)

So this year we have (what seems to be) a "down" year in terms of MNHS prospects. Leading the group this year is Mario Lucia from Wayzata, a player that could go in the first round... but personally I think he's going to fall into the 2nd round. Sure he's got the size teams like, but he didn't dominate the way players like Bjugstad, Leddy, etc. Another reason why I think he'll fall is that he just finished his junior year (which also could explain why he hasn't dominated yet.) That's another year of development behind most other prospects. So if he does fall into the 2nd round, how far does he fall? Well odds are the teams near the front of the line, will want a prospect that isn't 3+ years away from the NHL... so unless a team trades up from near the back, I think he's going to fall far enough that he might not even be the first MNHS player picked.

One player I am rather surprised at how low he's ranked is Kyle Rau. I get that he's small, but if you could see how hard the kid worked while getting the crap kicked out of him behind the play by Duluth East in the championship game... you'd see that he's one tuff kid. Considering how low he's ranked (#177 on NHL.com) he'll probably go undrafted till near the end (when you might see flyers being taken left and right.) Do I think he'll make it in the NHL? There is always that chance.

Hopefully TaLoN can chime in here, but if anyone else wants to add in their 2 cents into this... by all means... I'd love to hear that I'm full of crap

you are full of crap! marioban

nhl.com had a feature of native MN kids and how many of them will be available for the draft. People are jocking Lucia's nuts pretty hard.

I wasn't talking about the kids that played USHL or other junior leagues.

Completely agree that Rau is hurt by his small stature...his skill is amazing, and nobody works harder. I'd love to see the Wild pick him up late.

I don't see any Minnesotan going in the first this year sorry to say. Ambroz hurt his draft stock this past season, not sure the USHL was the best decision he's made.

I'd be happy if the Wild took a flyer on Rau in the 7th round (at that point it's a total crap shoot anyways, so why not?)

I think 2nd round you'll see the MN boys getting picked up. I just see a lot of "good" players and no "great" players that came out this year (but the same can be said about this years entire draft... a lot of "good" but not a lot of "great" going on.)

which is why I don't see many teams either moving up or down for the draft. It's soooo wide open in terms of prospects, almost all of them are 1-3 years out with lots of promise to make the NHL.

Teams still may move if they really like a certain player.

His hockey sense really put the lack of size out of mind a bit then...

I understand the whole size issue... but smart players can over come being shorter.

Day 2 was a big day for Minnesota draftable players

2011 NHL Draft a big day for a lot of Minnesota kids

Written by Derek Felska | 26 June 2011

Its almost any young male hockey player's dream growing up in Minnesota. Apart from hoisting the Stanley Cup is the thought of being drafted by a NHL team. The moment of being selected is the ultimate culmination of all of those countless practices and games, miles traveled to far off arenas, and hard work put in honing their skills, skating and strength on their own. I do not believe every parent has an NHL expectation for their son, but for parents it certainly makes them feel perhaps a little better about spending thousands of dollars helping their child reach for their NHL dreams. Being drafted is no guarantee of great financial rewards but its a far better chance statistically than the thousands of players who do not get drafted.

Minnesota takes a great deal of pride in its strong hockey heritage. Afterall we call ourselves the State of Hockey and every year the state usually leads the way in the number of players' selected. Yet there are signs that could be changing. For the first time in a long while there was not one player from Minnesota selected in the 1st round, breaking a streak that had lasted since 2001. The were only 4 American players selected in the first round and they were from Ohio (2), Massachusetts (1) and Texas (1). The variety of locations in the U.S. for draftees is growing as this nhl.com article demonstrates. California, Florida, Colorado and Arizona are all non-traditional hockey states that had players selected in this year's draft. So is the league's great expansion to the sunbelt throughout much of the mid-1990's really a complete disaster, not for American hockey it hasn't. In addition, it is not as though Minnesota was shut out in this year's draft; 14 Minnesotans were selected in 2011. Most of these Minnesotans were selected from their high school teams just adding to the lore and prestige of the world's most competitive high school hockey entity. These names are simply added to the already large list Minnesotans who were lucky enough to have their names called on draft day, names like current NHL'ers Erik Johnson, Blake Wheeler, Keith Ballard, Zac Parise, Mark Stuart, David Backes, Tom Gilbert, Derek Stepan, Tim Jackman, Dustin Byfuglien and Paul Martin just to name a few. Even for those not selected on draft day, they may impress enough in college to earn a shot at the NHL as was the case with Jason Blake and Dan Sexton. So all hope is not lost for any of you who did not hear your name on Friday or Saturday, your time may be coming if you stay focused and work hard enough.

Here is a complete run down of those 14 Minnesota players selected by NHL teams this weekend. (click on the link for the rest of the article)

This gives a full run down of Minnesota-born players drafted this year. Enjoy!
